John Casken: Kokoshka's Doll - world premiere

Expressionist painter Oskar Kokoshka's life-size doll of his former lover Alma Mahler is the inspiration for John Casken's 'Kokoshka's Doll' with text by Barry Millington, to be premiered by Counterpoise with Sir John Tomlinson, bass, and Rozanna Madylus, mezzo soprano at the Cheltenham Festival, Deal Festival and Buxton Festival in July. 'Kokoshka's Doll' evokes the passions unleashed by the affair and the traumas the artist suffered in the First World War.

Ed Hughes: Robot Opera, Brighton: Symphony of a City; Cuckmere project

Ed Hughes's Robot Opera, written for two robots in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Sussex, premiered on 15 June and is featured in the i newspaper. Ed's 'Brighton: Symphony of a City', premiered at the 2016 Brighton Festival, will be shown as part of the Sussex Community Festival on 25 June and the Orchestra of Sound and Light are on the road with a series of workshops with filmmaker Cesca Eaton exploring new music by Ed Hughes and silent film footage by Cesca Eaton inspired by Cuckmere Haven.

Robert Saxton at the Aldeburgh Festival

The Aldeburgh Festival Orchestra will perform Robert's 'The Resurrection of the Soldiers' on 13 June 2017 at the Britten Studio at Snape Maltings. 'The Resurrection of the Soldiers' was commissioned by the Presteigne Festival and the English Symphony Orchestra and premiered at Presteigne in August 2016. The concert also features works by Robert's former student Deborah Pritchard. 

Baroque Collective Singers: Summer, Song and Strawberries plus Dido videos

The Baroque Collective Singers present tudor madrigals and French and English partsongs by Hindemith, Jannequin, Britten and Whitacre on Sunday 2 July at St Michael's Church, Lewes. Ed Hughes & Orchestra of Sound and Light: Cuckmere project launch

The Orchestra of Sound and Light has launched its Arts Council funded Cuckmere project with a series of workshops in schools and colleges across East Sussex. Composer Ed Hughes and film maker Cesca Eaton plus the five core musicians of the Orchestra of Sound and Light spent two days working with GCSE students at Hastings Academy. The students edited their own cut of Cesca's stunning film of Cuckmere Haven and wrote and performed new scores to their films. OSL also performed a new 6' score by Ed Hughes to Cesca's Cuckmere footage.
