Brief Biography

Stephen is an outstanding young violist. Originally from Atlanta he is now based in London where he completed postgraduate studies with David Takeno. In 2013 and 2014 he worked with Pierre Boulez as part of the Lucerne Festival Academy and has performed with Klangforum Wien and the Aurora Orchestra. He is artistic director of Sounding Motion, exploring contemporary music and dance. Events in 2014 included workshops and a Barbican residency with Sounding Motion, exploring the relationship between live contemporary chamber music and dance, and two appearances at the London Ear Festival in March 2014. 2015 included a recital at the Brighton Festival, international touring with the Academy of St Martins in the Fields and Rambert Dance Company, appearances with London's Riot Ensemble, performing the Bartok viola concerto with the Kensington Philharmonic, masterclass and guest artist recital at Auburn University (USA), return appearance at the closing concert of the London Ear Festival, performances with Ensemble Modern as part of their Lachenmann Festival and heading a yearlong collaboration between Sounding Motion and Sound and Music. In 2016 Stephen joined the Artistic Board of the Riot Ensemble; their Southbank Centre concert on 1 October 2016 was broadcast on BBC Radio In November Stephen performed as soloist in Feldman "Rothko Chapel" with Lontano and the New London Chamber Choir at the Warehouse, London and gave the world premiere of a new work for solo viola by Mark Simpson.
